i started playgroup as a way to have a regularly scheduled time to create art with friends (and to share the art supplies i’ve collected over the years)
it transformed into a space that made me feel like a kid again in a sweet, nostalgic way.
on one hand, i wanted to create playgroup to embrace that childlike energy and create a safe space for people to try and explore even if they’re “bad at art”
on the other hand, i want to challenge the narrative around social gatherings which are largely centered around consumption (eating, drinking, shopping, watching, etc). what happened to play?
creating in community >>>> consuming in community
at playgroup we sip on juice boxes and go back to a time where friendships were formed in the same room and by getting our hands messy. we experiment and create and play; focusing on the process more than the end product. the activities are chosen based on what little olivia would enjoy creating with her friends (which is healing my inner child in a way)
i know for a fact that 7-year-old olivia would’ve had perfect attendance at playgroup
